Daryl & I drove up to the beautiful little seaside town of Avila to meet up with his two sisters, Julie & Annemarie where they competed in a mini triathlon in July. We were off to a slow start when Daryl's fuel pump failed on the way up and we found ourselves trapped in the median of a major highway for near two hours in the 97 degree weather. But, we made the most of it and arrived safely late that evening.
Team J-A-D's main goal was to finish without signs of angina, which they did. Daryl did the 36 laps of swimming and beat the time he was swimming at 11 years old (his personal goal) by nearly a minute. Then Julie completed the bike leg in less than 1 hour and Annemarie brought it home with the three mile run placing the team 429th of 860 entries--top half! Over 100 entries did not complete the course.
Julie, her husband dave and their kids, Gabe & Brett rented a cute house in the hills for the month. We all took advantage of the rental and stayed on a few days before and after to enjoy fruits of Avila and time with family. Annemarie was joined by her son Jacob. We picked berries, ate lots of ice cream, hit the beach and even sqeezed in a bon fire complete with smores! I think the boys will remember digging for sand crabs & making sand bridges. Jacob got to spend time with Uncle Daryl hitting the surf on boogie boards and playing Yu-Gi-Oh. Julie even joined in on the wave action in her new wetsuit. It was a great trip overall and we'd all like to see it become an annual event.
